B.S.P.S Teams  Summer Champs 2011 report from Fiona Johnstone

The inter-country team reception was held the evening before the competition

.

Like last year there were 8 teams- 3 English, 2 Irish, 1 Welsh and 2 Scottish.

Team Balmoral were drawn first to jump.

The team consisted of

Nikki Melville on her 143cm The Pied Piper,

2 153cm ponies Tiffany McTaggart on Caperann Swift and Harry Waterston with Ritz and Pieces

and Alex Mundell in the intermediate section with Pebbly Limited Edition.

Team Glamis were drawn in 8th place being last to jump.

Glamis consisted of Madeleine Tinson on the 133 Aliludo,

Jessica Tinson on Pebbly Grey Fox in the 143 height,

Ariadne Weir on her 153 - Otto

and Stuart Sloan on Tinka's Flash in the 158 section.

Rumour had it the Scots were seen as the strongest opposition to the Engish!!

On Thurs morning we walked the course at 7:30am. prior to an 8am start.

As usual the course was long and techinical with 12 fences.

From fence 4 ( a bridge over water with plastic poles which fell easily) to fence 8 was a difficult loop which caused many problems.

Madeleine was 4th in the 133cm section.

Nikki Melville was first to jump in the 143ht group and jumped a fabulous clear round to win the class.

Jessica Tinson was 4th.

Tiffany McTaggart was first to jump in the 153cm class and knocked a few.

Ariadne on Otto jumped 1 of 2 clears and finished second.

Harry Waterston and Ritz and Pieces had a bad day at the office.

Alex and Stuart competed in the 158 class where Stuart was first. and Champion

Rumours abounded all afternoon that we might have won but couldn't be confirmed until the evening performance.

Team Glamis had won and as far as I can tell Scotland has not won since 1991.

Both teams competed well and are a credit to their parents and Scottish Branch for their manners, good sportmanship and working together.

As usual we were unable to field complete teams in the premier leagues but tried our best with some good  placings.

Only the youngest members paraded on Sat evening but we joined up with Area 1b (Cumbria) who were few numbers.

We even persuaded one to wave a Saltire!

Results and Report form Summer Champs

or another week in the life of another Chef D'quipe - Fiona Johnstone

Scotland had 2 teams entered in the inter country team competition at the

2010 BSPS Summer Championships.

There were a total of 8 teams taking part - 3 English, 2 Irish, 1 Welsh and 2 Scottish teams - team Balmoral and team Glamis.

The competition took place on the 2nd day in very wet conditions similar to Ayr Show in 2009!

Unfortunately, Tiffany MacTaggart had to withdraw Caperann Swift due to injury - finger crossed for a quick recovery!

After a frantic phone call while walking the course, Alex Mundell was pressed ganged into Team Balmoral and Stuart Sloan kindly stayed behind to walk the course with us again.

Every team member rode exceptionally well over an up to height course in difficult conditions. At the end of the morning we were hopeful for a good placing as Harry Waterston with Mayflower Magic had won the 143cm section, Jessica Tinson with Pebbly Grey Fox was 5th in the 143 section, Hannah Sloan on Highgrove Valentino was 2nd in the 153cm section and Stuart Sloan was 2nd with Tinka's Flash in the 158cm section.

At the presentation England Kempton were the winners with 280 points.

Team Glamis also had 280 points - but England won by virtue of having 2 wins and 1 third to our 1 win and 2 seconds.

Never mind we will be back next year to try again.

Our premier league teams were unplaced as didn't have a full team in any category. Maybe next year we could persuade more people to do the dressage!

Thanks to everyone who entered the team competitions

The rosettes, and sashes,  can be collected at the Finale Show

for those who left early.

For those of you who have not taken part in the Premier League Teams before, by way of short explanation:-

At the Summer Championships there is a Competition known as the Premier League.

This competition is run on the final day of the Summer Championship show.

It is run as individual classes which cover every discipline.

Anyone who has qualified can enter these classes, either in red or blue division (see BSPS RULE BOOK and Summer Champs Schedule))

Each individual area of the BSPS, and also the Scottish Branch and Ireland,

are asked to put forward teams of up to 6 members, or 8 in the case of Heritage,

from those entered in the Premier League classes.

There are 4 different teams put forward:

  • 1 comprising show ponies

.

  • 1 comprising show hunter ponies

.

  • 1 comprising working hunter ponies

.

  • 1 comprising heritage ponies

.

  • 1 dressage team

Any member of the Scottish Branch who enters the Premier League classes is eligible

for selection in one of the Scottish Premier League Teams.

If selected, the individual’s placing in the particular premier league class is given a score

and the scores of all the team members added together to find which team is the winner.

The big thrill of all of this, and the culmination of the week’s competition is the

Parade of the Teams on the Saturday night.

All the area teams enter the arena, in order, on foot in formal show dress.

It is a real party atmosphere and of course there are loads of flags to wave!!!

Even if you don’t make the team we make it a policy that all members are invited to the parade

to do their bit of cheering and flag waving!!

Rosettes for all and a huge party atmosphere make for a great end to an exhausting week!!

Chairman's Message

On behalf of Scottish Branch I would like to congratulate all our members who

competed at the Irish WHP International at Cavan,  - they did us proud!.

.A BIG thank you to their Mums and Dads who looked after and supported everyone

over a very enjoyable and memorable weekend and finally a GREAT BIG THANK YOU

to our chef d'equipe, Aly Boswell who worked tirelessly from start to finish.......and was still smiling at the end.

     Well done everyone

           Joyce Coltart

               (Scottish Branch Chairman)

A week (or so ) in the life of a Chef d'equipe - Aly Boswell reflects on Irish International WHP Champs

Having been asked to be Chef D'Equipe for the whp teams early on in the year, I was also told that it was still very much up in the air as to whether the competition took place, so when we were given the thumbs up signal everything was all systems go as it was obvious we would be able to field 2 teams.

Having been to the Highland show to watch most of them competing over a HOYs qualifying course and to introduce myself to the children and their parents, a list of the teams and the two reserves was drawn up.

It was my idea to have the teams here( Auchinleck) together for a training day, however with everyone living in different parts of the country and some having holidays booked, it really ended up that they all came whenever they could or when the weather allowed them to!!!

There were 2 teams, one called Balmoral in which was;

Billy Elliot    133      ridden by Henry Morshead

Touch of Frost    143       ridden by Alex Mundell

Kian's Choice     153      ridden by Alice Hill

Clonshire Harvey V   153     ridden by Rachael Brown

Reserve      Sannan Valley Sequence    158    ridden by  Angus Adams

The other I named Glamis and consisted of;

Bochum Magic Solo  133   ridden by James Hay

The Pied Piper      143     ridden by Nikki Melville

Kaleidoscope Callisto   153   ridden by Heather Larson

Gold Card 11     158   ridden by Kirsty Bryson

Reserve was  Caperann Swift   153   ridden by Tiffany  Mactaggart

All the teams left Scotland on the lunchtime ferry on the Wednesday and Joyce Colthart and I left on the Thursday ferry aiming to join up with them all in the middle of Thursday afternoon. We were delighted to find ourselves parked second to get off, on what was a very busy ferry, the only trouble was that for some reason the electronic locking system on the car decided not to work which I have to say caused a few minutes of panic as by now all the cars behind us were reving up their engines for a quick getaway, however the problem was resolved and we did have quite a laugh about it once we were on terra firma!!

We arrived at Cavan to find that sadly Rachael Brown's pony was lame, which meant replacing her with Angus Adams. I have to say that Rachael and her parents were real "star's" as they were totally committed to supporting the teams and were never without a smile on their faces, such a lovely family.

Joyce had brought with her the lovely waistcoats provided by BSPS Scotland for all the riders, which had their names embroidered on the front and Cavan WHP International 2010 on the back plus they all got caps to wear,

I was lucky enough to get one as well and the team looked really smart, so thank you very much to the Scottish BSPS Committee for funding these.

I disappeared off to the Chef D'Equipes meeting where all the countries were totally surprised to find that a rule that looked as if it meant that the competitors must wear snaffles for dressage, which is normal, actually meant that they had to wear snaffles for the whole of the International classes,

There was quite a bit of alarm about the safety of putting horses that were used to jumping in different bits into a snaffle and in fact on the second day they decided to amend this rule to it carrying a 5 mark penalty if you wore  something other than a snaffle and a 5 second penalty in the show jumping phase, which was agreed by all the countries.

This meeting took such a long time that Joyce began to think I had been kidnapped!!!

That evening we had a very nice reception for everyone, the teams were all introduced, flags flying galore! before we eventually turned in for the night , so as to be ready for the first leg of the International competition which was the dressage phase.

Cavan has several indoor arena's, the largest of which was divided up into 2 dressage arena's and a warm up arena. The warm up area wasn't very big when at it's busiest and it was a bit like playing dodgems trying to ride around. However they all managed quite well, even though we did have some very spooky animals,

Alex didn't have an easy time and poor Alice went wrong only to have one of those awful moments where you can't think where you are going. Our best place came from Kirsty Bryson who finished 3rd in her height class and Heather Larson who finished 4th in hers. James was 6th, Angus was 6th,Henry was 7th and Nikki was 9th.

I have to say that no-one was allowed to see the marks for any of these International competitions until they were announced on the Saturday night at the prize giving....the suspense..!!

We moved on in the afternoon to the warm up class which was not part of the International, but just to give them a taste of riding in the outdoor ring. This time around both Alex's and Alices's ponies redeemed themselves, Alex coming 2nd and Alice 4th!! James had rather a spooky ride and Henry ended up 6th with Nikki coming 5th and in the 158 section Kirsty was 4th and Angus 5th.

In the meantime Tiffany Mactaggart was competing in the Gold cup class and by the time all the team members had finished we were able to go to the indoor arena to watch the Gold Cup jumping, in which Tiffany jumped 2 clears the second being fast enough to win her  1st place in the jumping and when the results of the dressage were announced she was the overall winner in her section, so well done to Tiffany.

And so to the big day which was Saturday, we were up bright and early as the 133 class was first and we walked the course at 8a.m. I thought the course was big enough for our two boys as they had a treble which had a big brush spread going into it followed by a water tray and rails to a gate, the distances for them walked a little long in view of the fact that they would undoubtedly "back off" the fence going in and then do the same again at the water tray.

Some of the spreads were quite substantial on the course and both boys were told to keep going forward, not at a gallop, but strongly with something in their hand so to speak.

To that end both boys did exactly as they were told although sadly for James his pony being very careful jumped into the treble with a huge jump and ran right handed at the second element leaving him on the floor,

Henry also had a run out at the second element but came round again with determination and completed the course, he then went on to do a show we had practised and gave an outstanding gallop, I watched as the judges face lit up with a big smile and I hoped it would stand him in good stead, which it did as he ended up 5th.

In the 143 class Alex ended up 7th and Nikki 3rd and in the 153 our fortunes looked up when Heather jumped a copybook clear round on her coloured pony, Alice also jumped a clear round but not quite so fluently as she put in extra strides here and there which definitely cost her a few places as she finished only 10th whilst Heather won.

In the 158 we had Kirsty in 3rd place and Angus finished 2nd which was really good as his mare has a huge jump but is definitely still quite green, her eyes were out on stalks as she came through the treble!! so well ridden Angus!

We had quite a break before the show jumping so I was treated to this amazing Bar-B-Q lunch put on by all the parents, it was wonderful and I think I remember having 2 minutes shut eye afterwards, which was only disturbed by the flashing of camera's as everyone decided to get a quick pic of me snoozing!!

Joyce managed to join us as well, having finished judging at that time and it was really nice for everyone to get to know one another, I think she was offered a chance to join some of them on the bouncy castle but sadly declined due to her afternoon commitments!!

Finally we moved indoors rather later than scheduled for the jumping competition, everyone jumped 2 rounds  irrespective of your first round score you still had the chance to go against the clock.

In the 133 neither Henry or James managed to stay clear for both rounds but were fast enough to earn James 6th place and Henry 8th place.

In the 143 class Nikki finished 6th but it was Alex who nearly brought the house down as she had jumped a clear round the first time and was definitely for having a go at being the fastest in the jump off, I don't think I have ever seen anyone turn as fast going as quickly as Alex did, she was way ahead of all the others to take 1st place.

In the 153 it was Alice's turn to shine coming home a really creditable 2nd and Heather finishing 4th.

In the 158 class, Kirsty finished 3rd again and Angus finished 4th .

Tired though we all were by the time prize giving finally got going ( about 10.30 !!) It was really great that even though we were beaten into 4th and 6th place, Heather Larson was the winner of the gold medal for the overall best whp, Alex Mundell won a gold medal for the overall best show jumper and a bronze medal for being 3rd overall in the 153 class and Kirsty Bryson won a silver medal for her overall performance in the 158 class and everyone was placed in something.

On my behalf I would say  a big thank you to our BSPS committee here in Scotland for arranging to provide some funding to help the whp teams trip to Ireland, thank you also to Joyce Coltart who was such a fun person to travel with and thank you to all the members and parents who came on this trip, you were all great to work with and I hope the remainder of the season is as much fun as Ireland was.

BSPS Scotland News Review

Hello Everyone - after all of our lovely April sunshine, we have had to
go back to wellies and raincoats - cold, wet and windy May - here's
hoping 'summer' is round the corner!!

Helen Outram emailed me to let me know that her daughter Emma (5) and
her pony Bronheulog Charmer (aka Charlie) have had a flying start to the
season in the Lead Rein of Hunter Type classes.  They had a win first
time out at Kilmaurs show, followed by a win and mini hunter pony
Championship - then reserve supreme of the show at Kingsbarns.  On the
bank holiday Monday at Puddledub show, they were again top of the lead
rein of Hunter Type and mini champion.  They also added a win in the
Pretty Polly RIHS lead Rein class, and gained the Pretty Polly
Championship qualifying for the Dalton Stud Supreme ridden final.

Well done to you and your back up team!!

Thank you to well known judge Fiona Stewart who came along to Masterton
Farm and gave us a very informative and interesting presentation for our
budding Young Judges.  It is hoped to run more of these evenings
throughout the summer in different venues - if anyone is interested in
taking part, please get in touch with Alex Bankier or Helen Outram who
are co-ordinating this.

As ever, if any of our BSPS Scotland members have results, or news you
would like to share and see in the Review, please forward them to me -
all of my details are on the BSPS Scotland website, worth a look for
your up - to - date news.

Happy Showing!  Fiona

BSPS Scotland March

2011

A huge Thank You to trainers, Phillipa Aitken (flat and grass roots) ,Richard Telford (whp) and  course builder Jack Bishop who all worked tirelessly and provided excellent tuition at the recent BSPS Scotland training day at SNEC.

The day was enjoyed by members and non-members, and both adults and children benefitted hugely from the high quality of the coaching.

Thanks must also go to Helen Outram who co-ordinated the whole day and was there at 7am along with Jack to set up the WHP course, both instructors started at 8am and taught throughout the day until 7pm at night.

Again appreciation to those who stayed on to help clear the areas and help stack jumps onto the trailer – many hands making light work!

Two of our young judges, Becca MacMillan and Sarah Gemmell did a sterling job in judging the new combination/practice classes.  They were both very professional, worked well together and looked extremely smart.

As the day was so successful with such a high demand for training, the format may be different for next year – possibly over two days with some type of demonstration incorporated into the event.

What do you, the members think?  Any ideas would be appreciated – please give any ideas/suggestions you have to your committee members .

The Spring Show at Rowallan on Saturday March 5th enjoyed a dry day with busy rings and visitors from over the border for the RHIS Qualifiers.  Congratulations to Millie Manners who was overall Supreme Champion of the show with Daukester Simon of Warleigh, with Holly Stewart and Shamrocklake Shirley-Temple taking the Reserve Supreme.

Full results are on the BSPS Scotland Website along with lots of other articles and information.

Here’s hoping Spring is on the way, although as I write this we still have snow on the ground here – it seems to have been a very long winter!!

Enjoy the next month with your ponies and let me know what you are doing!!

Best wishes

Fiona Longley

BSPS Scotland February 2011

BSPS Scotland Winter Show at SNEC on the 12th of February was a great success with a wonderful atmosphere, and everyone glad to see friends and actually do something with their ponies!

Linda Tinson and I would like to thank everyone for coming and competing, and a big vote of appreciation must also go to all of our stewards and helpers, and also our judges – a few of who brought their daughters to steward for them – a different kind of ‘bring your daughter to work day’!!

Our very kind sponsors of the supreme of show were Peter Page Photography – on hand to capture the moment too!   The happy winner of the Supreme of show was Danielle Grant with Llanarw Betsan, and the Reserve Supreme was Chesterhill Forrester ridden by Ruth Darling.

The second hand tack stall proved very popular, as did all of the home-made cakes!

We can now look forward to our training day at the same venue on the 26th of February and our next show on the 5th of March at Rowallan equestrian centre (all details on the BSPS Scotland Website).

Well we have had a busy time up and down the road we set off to Great Yorkshire and the North of England and had a few days rest at Arena UK in between.  We also set off to the RIHS where we stayed with Pru, Jamie and Charlotte of Classic Security and had a very enjoyable time there.  The weather was so warm compared to what we had left behind in Scotland.!!

The ponies have been notching up the results starting at Riverside Show which is run by Susan Harper and her daughter Tricia for the Leukaemia Charity.  Sofie and Mountcharles Fifefly won their inhand class and were inhand Champion, they also won their 13.2 show pony class and were Reserve Champion.  Zoe and Marshbrook Ltd Edition won thier 143cm SHP class and were Champion.  Jack of Diamonds won his 148cm Show Pony class.  This show is a fun day out for the kids and very well run and we all had a most enjoyable time at it.

At Biggar Show the girls stood Champion with Jack of Diamonds and Reserve Champion with Mountcharles Fifefly.  Zoe and Harry won the 143cm SHP and were Reserve Champion.

At Perth Show Zoe won the 148cm SP class with Jack and Sofie won the 138cm class and stood Champion with Mountcharles Firefly getting their first champion of champions qualifier! Sofie also won the ridden arab class and stood Ridden Arab Champion.  Zoe and Harry won the 143cm shp.

Dumfries show was a great day for us taking 1 2 and 3 in the Ridden Arab Class.  Kimberley and Rotherwood Rainbow won the class and later stood overall Arab Champion, Zoe and Jack were 2nd and Sofie and Willow were 3rd.

I cannot believe that by the time this news review comes out the summer champs will be over and the winter season will soon be upon us. How time flies when you get older !!!

I know many of you have been out and about competing and having fun – please let me know what you have been up to!

Mary Nicoll  sent me the news from her yard –

We have only been out a few times this month as Daphne (the wagon) has been getting her makeover finished and we are still trying to find time to put her off the road for her respray! Kimberley started her new job this month with Barclays Bank so it has been all go on the yard for Zoe and myself.

We were out at Stewarton and Dunlop show where we had a successful day.   Zoe won the 143cm shp class with Harry and Kimmie won the 153cm class with Poker but due to a stray cow entering the ring and scattering the line up poor wee Gemma Mason fell off her pony and kimberley being a First Aider forfeited her championship and jumped off to Gemmas rescue at which point Zoe was getting chased round the ring on harry by the cow and to cut a long story short Zoe stood reserve SHP Champion.

Kimberley rode our novice ISRT Fifi in the open ISRT and was 2nd they also did the Part Bred arab class where they were 2nd to Zoe and Jack who won the class and went on to be Reserve Champion Arab.

We set off the following weekend down south where we stabled at a beautiful yard owned by Liz cross and competed firstly at BSPS Area 2B on the Saturday where Zoe and Jack won the 148cm Show Pony class first thing in the morning.  Kimberley rode Poker in the RIHS 153cm class but due to the rain he could not get a grip on his feet and decided it wasnt for him on this occasion. (I must add he ended up getting his first set of plates on as soon as he returned home and he feels as proud as punch with them on).  Zoe and Harry were 2nd in their RIHS 143cm SHP class which was good enough to give them their ticket.  Kimberley not wanting to be outdone by her sister rode Cherub in the RIHS NF and Connie class which they won and Qualified.  Two tickets on the one day!!!! Well done Girls.  We were supposed to go to Hambleton the following day but decided that the ponies had all done well so we ended up having a lazy day in the wagon watching tv all day!!

Next day we set off to NPS Area 5 to a glorious day.  Zoe and Cherub were 2nd in the Junior M&M and Reserve Champion. Zoe then rode Harry in the HOYS 143cm SHP where they were 5th, kimberley then rode Poker in the 153cm HOYS SHP where they were 6th which we were absolutely delighted with.  Jack later in the afternoon was 2nd in the 148cm SP and Cherub with Kimberley were 5th in a very strong junior RIHS M&M class. So a good weekend all in all.

At Central and West Fife Show which was held on a new showfield which was absolutely perfect with stunning views the ponies had a good show.  Zoe and Harry won the 143cm SHP, Kimberley and Poker were 2nd in the 153cm SHP and stood Reserve Champion.  Cherub who was ridden by Lucinda Stapleton on this occasion won the ridden NF and Connie class and then went on to win the mixed M&M inhand class and take the Championship.

It is also a big month for the McTaggart family as Dad, David is taking part in the 3 Peak Challenge as he tells us:-

Dear All,

As a lot of you will know, Melissa, Tiffany and I have been through a very traumatic time in the last year. To firstly lose Sarah-Jane (17) to meningitis and then 6 months later to lose Juliette (42) to cancer has been devastating to say the least

However on Friday the 18th June 2010 (starting at 4am), I along with 5 other team members are going to do The 3 Peak 24 Hour Challenge in aid of the above worthy causes.

I will navigate the crew (the girls will make sure I get plenty training driving to shows!) to Ben Nevis Scotland’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, England’s best then onwards to Wales’s mighty Snowdon.

All three of these mountains have to be conquered in less than 24 hours!

Our aim is to finish around midnight!!

All donations will be gratefully received no matter how big or small, as there are no administration costs 100% of your money will be donated to these worthy causes.

Your support, helping to prevent other people going through what Juliette and Sarah-Jane went through, will be greatly appreciated.

It could happen to any of us.

Yours

David Mactaggart

All information and forms are on the BSPS Scotland Website – get giving!!  And good luck David, you will have earned your Yorkie bar!

The Arbuckle family from Ayrshire would like all friends and fans of Hayborough Petite to know that she has joined her friends in pony heaven at the grand old age of 39 years.

When we bought her she was on loan to the Forbes family from Girvan where she gave Vivienne many years of fun.  I still look back to 1986 when I bought her when she was 15 from Joyce Downie thinking that I was paying too much for an old pony.  Little did I know she was THE "One in a Zillion".

Kim and Petite had several years of fantastic fun and glory, winning the Scottish Points Championship many times.  By the time Robin took over, Petite was 20 years old but it didn't stop her winning ways and she carried on where she left off with Kim.

After Robin outgrew her she was leased to the Metcalf family from Penrith where Richard also had some super, memorable times with her.  She taught him so much just as she had Kim and Robin and she still had so much to give even at 24 years young.  She then went on loan to Lindsey Bishop where she just went on winning.

She came back home to us after this and has been with us ever since.

Kim, Robin and Seonaid pray she is running in green fields with her friends.

That’s all for now folks – good luck  if you are out and about, and  don’t forget to let me know your news!  Fiona

April 2010

Hello everyone hope you are all well,  and here is some Scottish Spring News!

Elaine Robertson was kind enough to send me the following about her son Bryce and his pony  Penllyn Pirate at the Puddledub WHP Show, Balcormo.

It was their first outing of the year and having not seen a rustic fence for 6 months, they didn't quite know what to expect.  However the sun was shining and both Bryce and Pirate seemed on good form.

The first class was the Open Cradle Stakes which was a challenging course with some good up to height fences but the pair danced their way round and got a lovely clear, followed by a good balanced show.  They were absolutely delighted to be placed first and then went on to get Reserve Mini WHP Champion which was a fantastic achievement for their first day out.

The afternoon saw the Heritage M&M Nursery Stakes and then the Novice Heritage Mixed Height M&M, both of which they managed 2 lovely clear rounds and went on to get 2 firsts, then overall M&M Champion.
I am not sure who had the bigger smile -  Bryce or Pirate!

We thoroughly enjoyed our first experience of  BSPS Puddledub Shows with some lovely, friendly people and a very relaxed atmosphere and we now definitely have the bug for the season ahead, after a very positive start.

News from The Nicoll Show Team

The team have been working very hard with the ponies at home in preparation for the Winter Champs and the girls efforts of riding in the rain and snow paid off when we came back from the champs with great results.

Kimberley riding Riversdale Poker won the Open 153cm SHP, they also went into an evening presentation (the first Poker has ever done) and we were so delighted when he behaved himself and they were placed 5th in the Restricted SHP.  They also had great placings in the HOYS SHP coming 9th and in the RIHS SHP were 8th

Zoe-Martella riding Marshbrook Limited Edition were 2nd in the RIHS 143cm SHP and 5th in the HOYS SHP.

Kimberley riding our Connie Carlingford Cherub were 3rd in the RIHS connie and NF and 4th in the Open.

Kimberley riding Rotherwood Rainbow were pulled first in the RIHS Arabs but after a wee tiffle with the ride judge they ended up 3rd.  In the RIHS Int SRT they were 7th and in the HOYS 8th.

Zoe-Martella was riding her new show pony Jack of Diamonds where they got 4th in the Restricted Show pony, 7th in the HOYS and 9th in the RIHS.

We had a great show the weather mainly being kind to us when we were in the ring but the heavens opened every night when we were tucked up in bed.  We had a good journey back to Scotland arriving home at 11.00pm.

We are looking forward to the summer season now and we have a new addition to our team as Johanna is coming back into the show ring and we have bought her a lovely INT SH called Ramble On.

We wish everyone Good Luck for 2010 show season.

Mary Nicoll-Thompson

From the Longley family:-

We were delighted with our first outing of the year, when Skellorn Royal Consort and Highland Jury took Champion and Reserve Champion M&M Whp at the BSPS Puddledub show at Sandyflats.  However, a few weeks later, accident prone Rosie managed to damage ligaments in her knee.  5 weeks of rest for ponies and rider, a course of physiotherapy and a lot of clunking about on crutches and thankfully,  all seems better.  Rosie and Jury had a last minute outing to the NPS show where they won the Open Ridden M&M ‘A’ and the M&M Whp Championship, both Rosie and Jury had big smiles on their faces – glad to be out and about with friends again!  The pair also passed the BHS riding and road safety exam last week at Gleneagles.

The Weir Family travelled to the Winter Championships and had a fantastic show, as Ariadne tells:-

Otto started off the competition for me in the Royal International 15hh worker which we ended up winning, starting the champs off on a good note. We then went on to do the gold cup dressage which we found out later on in the day we had won as well. With Ruby Slippers I also did the RIHS working hunter which I was third in we then had a quick rush to get to the dressage,in the pouring wet rain- we were fourth in this phase. Day one had ended up well. Day 2 was the quietest day with only one class on each, I firstly did the gold cup workers on Ruby and came fourth with my points from phase one and two added together I was lying in first place. I then went on to do the gold cup workers on Otto  and ended up in 1st place with him.

This left us in 1st place as well and 9 points to spare going into the showjumping. Day 2 complete. On the last day I firstly did my HOYS workers on Ruby and had two unfortunate poles. Next I had Otto in the HOYS we had a clear round and ended up 5th in a class of ten clears. We now had to wait on until the night performance, and going in on top position on both left pressure on me to go clear. Ruby was the  first of my rides  and after completing a clear round on her it meant I kept my position at first place. Otto was next  we also had a clear round and finished up first. The chamnpionship was the final class of our time at winter champs and when I was selected champion on Otto  it made the mud the rain and the long journey greatly worth it. Ariadne.

Parkfield Freddie and Philippa were 9th in gold cup dressage, clear in gold cup workers, clear in HOYS and 6th place and finished 6th overall in the Gold cup

--

The Grants also went to the winter championships and Julie let me know their results as follows:-

Danielle Grant - Lindisfarne Grouse - 10th Working Hunter Phase - Novice 133cm Gold Cup

9th Novice 133cm Gold Cup - Overall Placing

                                                          8th Novice 133cm Working Hunter

Hannah and Betsy are a new combination from November 2009 - so still trying to learn to work together.  This was Hannah's first time to venture to the winter champs, after all the rain, mud and more mud - not sure if she will want to go back!!!

Hannah Grant - Llanarw Betsan -       10th RIH Heritage M&M First Ridden

Julie Bankier also had a fantastic time at the Championships with her new novice ponies as

her Dad Alex told me:-

Pennyroyal Little Brown Sugar 3rd HOYS, 2nd Rihs and qualified. She is a very, very sweet natured pony.

Valentine Maria 1st Winter Novice 12.2 final and Reserve Champion. So fine and showy looks like she has  been sculpted. Really looking forward to season with her.

Thank you to all who have been in touch – keep the news and results coming hope to hear from you soon and in the meantime have fun with your ponies

– here comes summer!!

Hello Everyone –

we are hoping all of the snow has left us for this year and we can all get out on our horses and ponies and have some fun! Many thanks to the following people who were kind enough to let me know their news so far!

News from the Nicoll Show Team.

We have eventually ventured out in 2010 and went to the Puddledub Show at Balcormo on Valentines Day. This was a very enjoyable and successful day for us.

Zoe also rode her new 148cm Jack of Diamonds and won the Novice IST and were Champion they also won the mixed height Open Show Pony and were Champion. Kimberley has a lovely new novice ISRT for this season called Jivetime Frightfully Nice owned by Jenny Gilchrist of the Romanno Stud and we cannot wait to show her.

The Team went out to BSPS Rowallan and had a good day. Kimberley had a busy day riding starting with Jack Of Diamonds where they won the RIHS Arab Qualifier. She rode Carlingford Cherub in the RIHS M&M Qualifier and was 2nd, and also was 2nd in the Open/Restricted M&M Ridden. On Rotherwood Rainbow she was 3rd in the RIHS Hack Qualifier and on Riversdale Poker was 3rd in the Mixed Height Novice SHP.

News from the Cohen family - they have bought Lippens Sweetcorn from the Veitch Family for Kirsty to branch out into Cradlestakes and 122cm WHP - and twin Lauren might enjoy a go at jumping her too. They are looking forward to joining fellow competitors at the working hunter rings over the coming season.

Sarah Burkhill emailed to let me know how delighted she was to win the Mini WHP Champion at the Sandyflats Puddledub show with her pony Obbly Onker (or Conker as he is known), they have been showjumping and done local showhunter classes collecting lots of rosettes and are looking forward to the 2010 season.

NEWS FROM THE SLIGHT FAMILY

Hurrah, the last of our snow has finally disappeared. Like everyone in the country we were struggling to get any work into our ponies and horses let alone get both them and ourselves sufficiently fit for our Scottish Branch Winter Show on Saturday 6th March. We were all looking so forward to catching up with all those friends, who, a bit like us have been in hibernation for most of the winter.

Friday dawned dry and bright but with Jill at school it left me preparing 3 animals for the show, along with packing the lorry for its first outing of the year too. Exhausted, I came into the house, around 8.30 pm, to sit down to supper which I had fortunately prepared the evening before. Then it was bed, although I no sooner had laid my head on the pillow than the alarm woke me at some sort of silly O’clock and I thought to myself, here we go, mad as March Hares we are. Our novice pony, loaded in the dark without any hiccups, and we had a stress free 2 hr journey to Rowallan.

STANLEY GRANGE CITY LIGHTS (Charlie) was first in the ring in the RIHS Part Bred Arabs at 8 am. He behaved beautifully and seemed to enjoy the new experience of being ridden by the judge. Jill and Charlie finished a creditable 3rd. On with the next pony – a homebred 143 cm SHP – CARAWAY DIAMOND SMUGGLER. This was Smugs first ever outing apart from travelling in the lorry a few weeks previously to be measured. Jill rode him beautifully and he took everything in his stride to finish 4th in a large mixed height novice class. Jill has done all the ride work on him herself and he proved a huge credit to all her efforts. A quick swop of jacket and number and Jill was back in the ring with Charlie for the Novice isrt, followed by the Open, where they finished reserve Champion in both. We were delighted with the judges’ comments when they said he was simply going better and better as the day went on. A mad rush back to the lorry, this time to work in our Connie, MILFORD ADVENTURER, Bob, to his friends. This was Jill and Bob’s first ever outing together and again we were not to be disappointed with his performance – 3rd in the RIHS Qualifier.

We, at last, had a short break while the Cobs and Riding horses performed in the Ring and as Douglas (non horsey father) had come with us (yes, he got up at 4 am!) to help, we decided to treat him to a light, late afternoon lunch in Rowallan’s restaurant. An hour or so later Jill was back in the saddle on Charlie and telling me that he felt tired, which I was not surprised to hear. However, we had entered the RIHS hack qualifier and I decided the pair should gain some experience in adult classes. Well, I almost dropped my grooming basket when the pair were pulled in top. This was their first ever venture into adult classes and I was so proud of them as they collected their red rosette, qualifying RIHS on their first outing. The perfect end to a super day out.

Rachael Snowie and Georgian Dorian competed in the Gleneagles
unaffiliated winter dressage league, they finished 2nd overall in the
series and won The Rider Cup for the highest placed junior!  Along with
a  nice leather headcollar and a large bag of treats for Dobbie!
Another string to  add to their bow!

Training Day

A very successful training day was held at Scottish National Equestrian Centre on 21st of February. There was flatwork with Phillipa Aitken and WHP with Richard Telford. Everyone found the instruction beneficial and it was fantastic to see so many new combinations out and about so early in the season. We also had 2 young judges (Lauren Jarvis and Sarah-JaneCrichton) on hand to judge 6 ‘practise’ classes and a Championship, under the eye of trainer Caroline Nelson, the Champion for the day being the McTaggerts Locharmoss Symphony and Reserve Charlotte Dun with Finn. Thank you to all the organisers, course builders and helpers both on the day, and behind the scenes, for making the whole experience so worthwhile.

I look forward to being inundated with all of your news, hearing all about your ponies and horses old and new, and also to meeting up with you all in the season ahead – let’s hope it’s a sunny one after all of the snow!
